PURPOSE AND HISTORY

The Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Education (MCAE) was established in 1992 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization through the merger of the Massachusetts Coalition for Adult Literacy and the Massachusetts Association for Adult and Continuing Education.

MCAE's leadership is primarily focused in two areas:

• Advocacy for sufficient resources and sound public policy in adult basic education (ABE) that will lead to high quality programs, instruction and working conditions.

• Professional development through its annual conference, NETWORK, the largest adult education conference in New England.

MCAE’s leadership in the public policy arena is especially strong as it develops and disseminates information regarding current and emerging adult basic education policies to its membership, policy makers and public officials. MCAE conducts legislative briefings, coordinates state and federal adult education testimony and participation at various hearings, distributes policy alerts, and mobilizes its membership to take action.
