Center for Adult Language Acquisition

Center for the Book
Congress established the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress by statute (P.L. 95-129) in 1977. Its purpose was to use the resources and prestige of the Library of Congress to stimulate public interest in books and reading. Its mission now includes literacy and library promotion and encouraging the historical study of books, reading, and the printed word. The center’s audience includes readers and potential readers of all ages.

Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy
The Goodling Institute provides national leadership that promotes the value of family literacy and supports program improvement through research and its application to practice and professional development. Housed within the Pennsylvania State University’s College of Education, the Institute works collaboratively with the College’s Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy and the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) Louisville, Kentucky.

Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy
Penn State’s College of Education established the Institute in 1985 as a vehicle for using the resources of a major land grant institution to address issues related to adult literacy. Our work has continued to focus on adults; however, it has expanded to include children within a family literacy context and adolescents facing literacy challenges. Since 2001, we also have worked collaboratively with the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy.

National Association for Adults with Special Learning Needs
NAASLN is an e-community association that offers members a centralized hub of information, professional development, technical assistance, communication on issues and trends, and advocacy initiatives on behalf of adults with special learning needs.

National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy
Although no longer in operation, NCSALL’s publications on adult learning are still available on-line. NCSALL was a federally funded research and development center focused on adult learning, which ended in 2007. It was a collaborative effort between the Harvard University Graduate School of Education and World Education, with the Center for Literacy Studies at The University of Tennessee, Rutgers University, and Portland State University as additional NCSALL’s partners.

National Center for Family Literacy
NCLF is based on the premise that when parents and children learn together, everyone benefits. NCLF works with a family literacy approach that offers whole families educational opportunities to improve literacy and life skills.

National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition

National College Transition Network
NCTN supports ABE staff, programs, and state agencies in establishing and strengthening ABE-to-college transition services through technical assistance, professional development, collegial sharing, advocacy and increased visibility for this critical sector of the adult basic education system. It is a project of World Education's New England Literacy Resource Center.

National Council of State Directors of Adult Education
NCSDAE is the national professional association for adult education state directors. It maintains a nationwide communication network regarding national policy and legislative issues.

National Institute for Literacy
NIFL is an independent federal organization that provides information on congressional legislation affecting adult education, programs and services offered by NIFL, and access to NIFL publications on the website. The LINCS section of this site includes facts and statistics, teacher and student resources, and links regional programs.

OTAN: Outreach and Technical Assistance Network for Adult Educators
A California-based organization which provides workshops for adult education practitioners in CA focused on using the internet for ABE.

ProLiteracy
ProLiteracy helps build the capacity and quality of programs that teach adults to read, write, compute, use technology, and learn English as a new language.

Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education
SCALE supports campus-based literacy programs locally, statewide, and nationally through our Literacy Action Networks. In these programs, college students serve as literacy tutors or teachers in their community, serving in programs including volunteer/paid tutors or coordinators, AmeriCorps members, VISTA members, and service-learning students.

TESOL: Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages
TESOL is a US-based membership organization that supports the development and professional expertise in English language teaching and learning for speakers of other languages worldwide. TESOL’s education section of its website includes a resource center, information on educational programming, mentoring opportunities, symposium and leadership development opportunities.

Verizon Foundation
The Verizon Foundation invests in online resources, community-based initiatives, and national programs that teach nonreaders to read and advance the skills necessary for educational achievement and job success. Thinkfinity Literacy Network, a joint partnership with the National Center for Family Literacy and ProLiteracy, provides free online educational resources for adults and family literacy programs.

World Education
World Education is dedicated to improving the lives of the poor through education, and economic and social development programs. World Education also works to strengthen literacy and adult basic education programs in the United States. The Working Poor Families Project
