Center for the Book
Congress established the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress by statute (P.L. 95-129) in 1977. Its purpose was to use the resources and prestige of the Library of Congress to stimulate public interest in books and reading. Its mission now includes literacy and library promotion and encouraging the historical study of books, reading, and the printed word. The center’s audience includes readers and potential readers of all ages.

Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy
The Goodling Institute provides national leadership that promotes the value of family literacy and supports program improvement through research and its application to practice and professional development. Housed within the Pennsylvania State University’s College of Education, the Institute works collaboratively with the College’s Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy and the National Center for Family Literacy (NCFL) Louisville, Kentucky.
Institute for the Study of Adult Literacy
Penn State’s College of Education established the Institute in 1985 as a vehicle for using the resources of a major land grant institution to address issues related to adult literacy. Our work has continued to focus on adults; however, it has expanded to include children within a family literacy context and adolescents facing literacy challenges. Since 2001, we also have worked collaboratively with the Goodling Institute for Research in Family Literacy.

National Center for the Study of Adult Learning and Literacy
Although no longer in operation, NCSALL’s publications on adult learning are still available on-line. NCSALL was a federally funded research and development center focused on adult learning, which ended in 2007. It was a collaborative effort between the Harvard University Graduate School of Education and World Education, with the Center for Literacy Studies at The University of Tennessee, Rutgers University, and Portland State University as additional NCSALL’s partners.

ProLiteracy helps build the capacity and quality of programs that teach adults to read, write, compute, use technology, and learn English as a new language.
Student Coalition for Action in Literacy Education
SCALE supports campus-based literacy programs locally, statewide, and nationally through our Literacy Action Networks. In these programs, college students serve as literacy tutors or teachers in their community, serving in programs including volunteer/paid tutors or coordinators, AmeriCorps members, VISTA members, and service-learning students.
