Lowell Adult Education Center

The Lowell Adult Education Center, is part of the Lowell Public School System and has been offering adult basic education since 1977. The Lowell Adult Education Center is one of the largest programs of adult basic education in Massachusetts and New England. On a yearly basis, the center graduates more than 475 adults with high school credentials and another 650 adults earn English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) certificates. Each year, there are more than 2000 adults who attend classes at the Lowell Adult Education Center.

The center’s mission and philosophy are to provide a full array of adult basic education services and opportunities to out-of -school youth and adults in the greater Lowell area in need of GED, ABE, and English language instruction. ABE & GED classes at various levels are offered both in the mornings and evenings to help adults prepare for the GED tests. Foreign speaking adults are placed in introductory, beginning, or intermediate classes to improve their communication, reading, and writing skills. Adults from Lowell, Billerica, Chelmsford, Dracut, Dunstable, Tewksbury, Tyngsboro, and Westford can attend the Lowell Adult Education Center.

In 2004, Boston Education, Skills & Training (BEST) Corp. was formed as an independent non-profit 501C3 organization focusing on workforce development and the creation of a Hotel Training Center. BEST Corp. seeks to provide individuals the education, skills and training to excel in the hospitality industry and in their personal lives.

Local 26 Hotel Training Center (HTC) provides classes in English for Hospitality, literacy, and citizenship as well as certification skills training in On-Call Banquet Server, Busser/Server, Basic Culinary Arts, Food Safety, Housekeeping and other nationally recognized certification trainings. We also provide career counseling and career workshops. In January 2008, HTC opened a state of the art computer lab. Classes in computer skills as well as drop-in lab hours are offered. HTC arranges one-on-one tutoring for those students who don’t fit into our regularly scheduled classes. Our goal is to meet the educational needs of our clients through a myriad of classes and other services.

Approximetly 65% of BEST Corp. funding comes from the Greater Boston Hotel Employees (GBHE) /Local 26 Trust Fund. BEST trainees benefit from a strong working relationship with UNITE HERE Local 26 and the partner hotel employers. BEST Corp. also receives or has received grants from the generous private, state and federal funding sources to train those seeking jobs with good pay and benefits in the hospitality industry.

GBHE/Local 26 Trust Fund (supported by a collaboration of 23 different hotel partners) and UNITE HERE Local 26 (Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union) have a long history of working together to provide comprehensive services to hotel workers. Through the collective bargaining agreement, an education and skills training fund was established. BEST Corp. is the provider of these educational services.
