The Intergenerational Literacy Program (ILP) was established in 1989 as a result of collaboration between Chelsea Public Schools and Boston University. Currently celebrating its 22nd year, the Intergenerational Literacy Program is one of the longest running family literacy programs in the United States.

What makes the ILP unique is that it gives both parents and children the opportunity and tools to develop their literacy skills and knowledge.

The ILP classroom strategy is to provide adults with instruction in reading and responding to literacy materials of adult interest. At the same time, parents are provided with resources, strategies and ideas for sharing literacy with their children.

Parents are encouraged to make use of the ILP’s library of multilingual, multicultural children’s books in order to continue to foster and strengthen positive attitudes towards reading and education in their children.

The ILP meets the needs of both working and non-working families by offering classes both mornings and evenings. Two instructional cycles are offered during the academic year and one twelve-week cycle is offered during the summer.

In addition to parents, adults who do not have children are able to enroll in two evening classes: Spanish GED and ESOL Level 1.

Since 1989, more than 2,000 parents and 4,000 children have completed at least one instructional cycle in the program. In 2009-10, 150 families, with a total of 360 children, were enrolled in the ILP. Families originated from 23 different countries and speak 11 different first languages.
