FEATURED ABE PROGRAM - ARCHIVE Read/Write/NowRead/Write/Now - Springfield City Librarywww.springfieldlibrary.org/rwnThe purpose of Read/Write/Now is to help adults living in the greater Springfield area to achieve their basic education goals as family members, workers and community members. Read/Write/Now provides an adult basic education program at no cost to participants. The program promotes self-directed learning by recognizing and valuing the strengths and knowledge that adults bring to learning. Read/Write/Now is committed to networking with agencies and resources in the larger community to assist learners and their families to meet their literacy goals. Read/Write/Now believes that adults learn best in an environment that reflects their diverse backgrounds with a curriculum that emerges from the interests and goals of the learners themselves. In addition to basic education classes, learners can become members of the Read/Write/Now Advisory Committee, the Student Council Board, or participate in other special projects, such as the Student Leadership Project. Volunteer opportunities are available at Read/Write/Now. Call 413-263-6839 to find out more. “Learning is Power” Video The 17 minute video "Learning is Power", was created in 2006 by the B-Ball team (Becoming a Better Adult Learner & Leader). It was made to share what the team discovered about what helps adults stick with it when they decide to go back to school to work on basic skills. We have found that sharing the video serves multiple purposes, including helping us orient new learners and potential volunteers. It also helps increase the understanding of the general public about what adult basic education is and how important it is for people to have a second chance at learning.
